Hi! I was so happy to note, in Adelante, that your January BOD meeting will be held on the grounds of our wonderful LIving-History & Train-Operation Center at Campo on Saturday!
Unfortunately, I am scheduled to work on the train crew on the following day (on the 17th) so will miss seeing your group.
You commented that there were no eating facilities nearby. In fact, the “Café ‘B’ ” is east of the museum on Sheridan Rd.; it has good custom sandwiches, etc. Also there’s a Subway shop located at the Circle K service station complex at Cameron Corners, on Highway 94 about 1½ miles east of the museum at Buckman Springs Rd.
Also, our Campo depot is light on snacks but has a LARGE selection of beverages and ice cream for sale in the gift store.
When you visit our exhibits, inside our Display Building, be sure to go up into the cab of the 2353 steam locomotive (accessible via a stairway on the backside of the locomotive, next to the Spreckels’ Business Car). Also, please tour our grand old 1926 Café-Observation car “AT & SF No. 1509.”
The afternoon “Golden State” old-time passenger train goes down the mountain to Tunnel 4 and the Lower Campo Creek bridge (and return). Boarding will begin about 2:15 at the depot and will depart promptly at 2:30 p.m.
The weather is expected to be partly sunny and cool, so your people should dress accordingly. Encourage them to visit the restrooms prior to boarding, as there are nofacilities on the train.
In 2019, our museum is planning a special event commemorating the 100th anniversary of the San Diego & Arizona Railway (NOT SD & AE; that came later).
Sorry I’m going to miss you this Saturday! Enjoy the outing!
